With most of the organization’s pitching talent stashed in the lower minors (until Dinelson Lamet’s promotion to Double-A San Antonio on Monday), the Padres made sure to get a usable big league arm in the James Shields deal, allowing their minor league depth to remain untouched in the short-term.
Good thing, too.
