A shoulder injury wiped away Steven Wilson’s freshman season at Santa Clara. Tommy John surgery kept Wilson from the mound in 2017. He was a sixth-year senior when the Padres signed him for $5,000 as their eighth-round pick in 2018.
The last check he deposited, after finishing 2019 in Triple-A El Paso’s bullpen, was for $932 at the end of August. His next was supposed to arrive in mid-April. Then the coronavirus threw the 25-year-old minor league pitcher’s livelihood into limbo.
“I feel like everybody is a little leery,” Wilson said Friday morning. “Nobody knows what’s going to happen in the coming weeks.
