No offense, but Padres know defense was a big reason for last season’s meltdown

PEORIA, Ariz. —

Chris Paddack took the mound on July 17 in Miami with the Padres having lost four straight after arriving at the All-Star break with a .500 record and just two games back in the National League wild-card race.

Paddack lost his perfect game bid in the sixth inning when Fernando Tatis Jr. sailed a throw from shortstop, but Paddack took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and the Padres got a much-needed 3-2 victory over the Marlins.

In a game played about 15 hours later, an error by catcher Austin Hedges allowed two unearned runs to score in the second inning, helping the Marlins to a 4-3 victory.
