SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. —
The Padres plan to acquire a starting pitcher or two this offseason.
It almost certainly won’t be Gerrit Cole or Stephen Strasburg.
Should the numbers league executives say Strasburg’s agent is talking about hold up as the going price, sources familiar with the Padres many plans for the coming months say the team will not be in the market for the San Diego native and World Series MVP.
Word is, agent Scott Boras is seeking a minimum commitment of six years at $30-34 million a year for the 31-year-old Strasburg.
That is too rich and too long for the Padres, which makes it exceedingly unlikely, too, that Cole will end up wearing brown in 2020.
