Christian Friedrich had a rough go of things this time around, with the Nationals hammering him for six runs in six innings. Half of those runs came on a pair of long balls. The Padres offense made some noise for the second night in a row, but they couldn’t stop the NL East leader.
The Friars got on the board quickly, with Jon Jay starting the game doing what he does best. His leadoff double put him in scoring position, and a ground out by Wil Myers set him up to go home on Matt Kemp’s single. That was the only time the team had the lead, and it didn’t last long.
