MILWAUKEE — Snow flurries fell from the sky on an abnormally frigid morning Saturday in Milwaukee. Inside a closed-roof Miller Park, the Padres' two most potent bats began to thaw. In a bullpen game for the visitors, their fine work would be undone by a late conflagration.
Wil Myers and Matt Kemp, both of whom entered the weekend in lengthy slumps, lashed consecutive doubles in one inning. In their next at-bats, they cranked back-to-back homers. Together, they helped San Diego to a four-run lead.
But in the Padres' 8-7 win over the Brewers, a grueling contest that took 12 innings and more than five hours, they spoiled a strong effort from reliever Brad Hand with a gradual implosion.
