Major League Baseball will continue to pay minor league players through May, it was announced Tuesday.
Minor leaguers had been receiving $400 weekly since the coronavirus pandemic shut down spring training. That pay — which is more than lower-level players receive but less than Triple-A players receive over a five-month season — will continue alongside medical benefits until May 31 or the start of the season — whichever occurs first.
As a point of procedure, MLB also informed the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues (Minor League Baseball’s governing body) that it is unable to provide players because of the current national emergency, a provision allowed for in minor league contracts.
