Now, all minor leaguers can count on pay through April 8 and perhaps even longer.
Major League Baseball on Thursday announced a league-wide initiative to pay minor league players a lump sum equal to the spring training allowances that would have been paid until the originally scheduled start of their season.
As the Union-Tribune reported Tuesday, MLB is also continuing to work with all 30 clubs on developing an industry-wide plan for minor league player compensation from April 9 through the beginning of the 2020 season.
The Padres previously said they would continue paying minor leaguers their spring training per diems — about $160 a day — while other teams had announced various plans to assist a large subset of players, many of whom make as little as $1,160 a month at Single-A affiliates.
