The San Diego Padres are “closing in” on a contract with veteran right-hander and native son Trevor Cahill, reports Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Lin says the 28-year-old Cahill, a graduate of nearby Vista High School, is expected to compete for a rotation spot.
Cahill appeared in 50 games for the Chicago Cubs last season, all but one in relief, and posted a 2.74 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP in 65 2/3 innings. The Oceanside, California, native has made 174 career starts, but just four in the past two seasons.
