SAN FRANCISCO -- Bryan Mitchell saved his best start of the season for his last one.
He may have saved his place on the Padres' roster altogether with his performance over the past month.
Mitchell carved up the Giants in a 5-0 San Diego victory Monday night at AT&T Park, as he came one batter shy of the Padres' first shutout this season. Instead, Mitchell settled for 8 2/3 innings of scoreless ball in which he struck out seven and allowed seven hits.
The Padres have a 40-man-roster crunch awaiting them ahead of December's Rule 5 Draft.
