Minors: Xavier Edwards a fast learner at Fort Wayne

Xavier Edwards is a fast learner. And he’s fast.

The Padres infield prospect picked up three more hits in low Single-A Fort Wayne’s 8-1 win at Beloit on Thursday, pushing his batting average to a Midwest League-best .370 average.

The next-best hitter in the circuit, West Michigan’s Nick Ames, is hitting .343.

A competitive-balance pick last June, the 19-year-old Thursday began Thursday with the Midwest League’s lowest swing-and-miss rate (2 percent), fourth-lowest strikeout rate (9 percent) and seventh-highest walk-to-strikeout ratio (1.10).

Edwards swiped his 11th base in Thursday’s win, also tied for the league lead.
