Minors: Sod Poodles spearheading downtown revival as baseball returns to Amarillo

AMARILLO, Texas —

The grass on Hodgetown’s grass berm in right field was still slick. A thunderstorm had already rolled through, delaying Thursday night’s first pitch by nearly two hours. The announced crowd of 5,371 was generous — as is the norm in minor league baseball — but Kevin and Becca McDonald were among a few hundred Amarilloans committed to seeing the final out even as the clock ticked toward midnight.

Of course they were. They are diehard Dodgers fans in Rangers country, the sort of baseball aficionados who don’t bat an eye at spending thousands of dollars to follow their first love to Milwaukee for the first two games of the NL Championship Series.
