Officially, professionally, Ryan Weathers is a winner.
The Padres’ 2018 first-rounder struck out eight over six strong innings on Wednesday, leading low Single-A Fort Wayne to a 12-2 win on Wednesday over visiting Dayton, Weathers’ first as a professional.
Weathers allowed two runs on five hits and didn’t walk anyone, lowering his WHIP to 1.00 through his first 11 innings (1.65 ERA) this year in the Midwest league. He has struck out 17, hasn’t walked or hit anyone and is holding hitters to a .256 batting average.
The six innings were also a career-high for the left-handed Weathers, the seventh overall pick last summer and the 91st-ranked prospect on MLB.
