The Padres removed Pedro Avila and Miguel Diaz from their 40-man roster. They did not cut ties with them completely.
Both right-handers are rejoining the Padres on minor league deals, the Padres announced Tuesday.
Avila, 22, was designated for assignment last week to make room for the return of left-hander Drew Pomeranz. The 25-year-old Diaz, meanwhile, was non-tendered ahead of Monday’s deadline.
Both pitchers are coming off season-ending injuries, with Avila most likely missing all of 2020 to Tommy John surgery.
Avila allowed a run in 5 1/3 innings in his big league debut in April but elbow troubled limited him to 24 minor league innings.
