Buddy Reed’s time with the Padres has come to an end after all.
Hours after the completion of the Rule 5 draft, the Padres announced the switch-hitting outfield prospect was heading to the Oakland Athletics as the player to be named later in the Jurickson Profar trade.
A Padres rep in the 2018 All-Star Futures Game, the 24-year-old Reed was left unprotected from the Rule 5 draft — and went undrafted — after struggling mightily in the Double-A Texas League.
The former second-rounder had a .213/.284/.339 batting line with 189 strikeouts in 164 games following his promotion from high Single-A Lake Elsinore.
