Fort Wayne is awaiting the return of one talented left-hander. Another one took a dominant step forward Thursday.
Joey Cantillo struck out six over six inning of one-hit ball in a rain-shortened 9-0 win over visiting Lansing, the first victory of the season for the 19-year-old prospect.
The six innings tied a career-high for Cantillo, a 16th-round pick out of a Hawaii high school in 2017. Thursday’s effort lowered his ERA to 3.21 over his first 28 innings with the TinCaps. He has struck out 38 and walked 12.
Fellow left-hander Ryan Weathers, the Padres’ first-round pick last year, is on Fort Wayne’s injured list with a bout of dead arm.
