The inevitable became official Tuesday: Minor League Baseball will not be played for the first time since its founding in 1901.
And, without a working agreement with MLB beyond this season and roughly 40 affiliates on the chopping block in public, testy negotiations over the offseason, no one is sure what Minor League Baseball will look like next year.
“It’s to be determined,” Minor League Baseball President & CEO Pat O’Conner said on a conference call with reporters. “There are no agreements on a successor (professional baseball agreement). … As serious as the threat from Major League Baseball was … this threat from the coronavirus transcends any list as far as teams not being around in 2021.
