WASHINGTON -- The Padres were looking for a way to give right fielder Matt Kemp a day off, but they probably didn't envision it working out this way.
Kemp didn't start Thursday's series finale against the Nationals because of a sore left shoulder, the result of a play in right field during Wednesday's 6-5 victory.
Kemp landed awkwardly on his shoulder after trying to make a running catch of a fly ball near the right-field line by Wilson Ramos in the second inning. Kemp remained in the game and actually hit a two-run double in the third as part of a four-run inning.
