Before Cal Quantrill starts against the Blue Jays on Saturday, fellow Toronto-area native Josh Naylor is expected to make his major league debut Friday.
The Padres are making their first trip of the season to an American League ballpark, where the designated hitter is used. Naylor, a 21-year-old from Mississauga, Ontario, will provide a left-handed option in a righty-heavy lineup.
The Padres’ fourth-ranked position prospect is batting .299/.378/.538 with 10 home runs for Triple-A El Paso.
Naylor will be the ninth player to make his major league debut for the Padres this season.
