Once viewed as one of the game’s elite hurlers, Josh Johnson originally arrived in San Diego in 2014 on a modest $8 million contract viewed as a risk/reward signing of a pitcher needing to rebuild value after an injury-played stay in Toronto. When an elbow reconstruction derailed that plan last April, the Padres tried again with an incentive-based $1 million deal.
