PEORIA, Ariz. -- When news broke that former Padres pitcher Randy Jones was battling throat cancer, the legendary lefty made a promise -- to himself as much as anyone else:
He would find a way to be at Padres Spring Training this year.
On Thursday, Jones -- sporting his trademark wry grin and gamesome sense of humor -- strolled into camp. He's still fighting the illness and hopes to be told he's cancer-free in early May. But first he had to make good on that promise.
"The opportunity to come out for a day and see the guys, get the uniform on -- I wanted to do it," Jones said.
