James Loney hit four home runs all last year in the majors. Fourteen games into his minor league deal with the Padres, the 31-year-old baseman hit his first in the Pacific Coast League.
Both Loney and designated hitter Ryan Schimpf homered and drove in two runs and Triple-A El Paso beat Salt Lake 8-5 on Monday, the fourth win in five games for the Chihuahuas (7-10).
Loney also doubled in a three-game game that raised his average to .304 and Manuel Margot (.302), Carlos Asuaje (.333) and Alex Dickerson (.327) all had two hit.
Reigning PCL Player of the Week Hunter Renfroe went 1-for-4 with a double and a walk.
