It doesn’t matter that Padres stunk on opening day

Opening day.

Every year on this renewing, we are reminded how much we like organ music. And bunting. And singing with thousands of strangers.

Hope in the air does strange and wondrous things to a person.

Optimism smells like popcorn. Optimism sounds like “Take me out the ballgame.” Optimism looks like exquisitely manicured grass.

Neither the Padres nor Dodgers had lost a game before Monday. Even a horrendous loss – like the one the Padres suffered Monday – is just a loss when it comes in the first of 162 opportunities at a win.

So much can happen over the next six months.
