Hosmer hammers 6th homer of season

SAN DIEGO -- Eric Hosmer wasted no time putting the Padres on the board in the bottom of the first inning Tuesday afternoon at Petco Park.

Hosmer followed Travis Jankowski's leadoff single by mashing a first-pitch dinger into the right-field seats. He turned on a 94-mph fastball from Rockies right-hander German Marquez for his sixth homer of the season.

Hosmer's blast broke up something of a mini-slump for the slugging first baseman. He was 8-for-44 (.182) in his past 12 games. Hosmer had struck out only eight times in that stretch, but he was making very weak contact for the most part.
