DENVER -- Austin Hedges dropped a successful squeeze bunt in the top of the ninth as the Padres defeated the Rockies, 4-3, at Coors Field on Sunday to avert a three-game sweep.
With runners at first and third and one out, pitcher Greg Holland (3-5) fielded the bunt and dived to tag Matt Szczur, who was making a headfirst slide. Holland tagged him in time, but could not hang onto the ball, and was charged with an error.
The Rockies, who got a two-run double from Trevor Story in their three-run second inning, saw their lead for the second National Wild Card cut to 2 1/2 games over the Brewers, who defeated the Marlins on Sunday.
