The Padres started the calendar year with four Rule-5 players on their active roster. They’re down to one now and it’s the youngest of that bunch drawing a significant assignment today in Milwaukee.
With Andrew Cashner finally hitting the disabled list, the Padres are handing the start to the 23-year-old Luis Perdomo, his biggest test to date after largely appearing in mop-up duty and low-leverage situations as a raw asset that the Padres would very much like to develop in the coming years.
As the numbers indicate, Perdomo is very much a work in progress: He is 1-0 with a 9.
