For Padres, draft to be followed by more immediately consequential decisions

It’s an important time of year for the Padres. This year, maybe doubly so.

The end of the amateur draft each year marks an unofficial beginning of the next step in team building — whether that means adding or subtracting or both or neither.

“You get through the 60-game marker and you get a better sense of which teams are going to be in competition for playoff spots,” General Manager A.J. Preller said Sunday afternoon. “… The conversation really picks up after this week.”

The Padres have seemingly stuck their landing in the draft since Preller and Scouting Director Mark Conner conducted their first one together in 2015.
