Wil Myers said Thursday afternoon what has been on the mind of so many for what seemed like so long.
“Let’s go, Tatis,” Myers hollered across the Padres clubhouse. “Tatis, we need you.”
At that moment, Fernando Tatis Jr. was facing a phalanx of media and talking about his return to the major leagues. The rest of the hitters were walking to their daily pregame meeting in the batting cage, and Myers was letting the rookie know it was time to go.
But it worked in a larger sense. The Padres need him.
“He’s just a huge part of our lineup,” Eric Hosmer said.
