During the Vietnam War, Anne Greenstone joined the military as a nurse to pay off student loans. She was stationed at an Air Force hospital, where she wearily waded through an onslaught of grisly battlefield injuries.
The North Park resident still cannot shake the images.
“It was horrendous,” she said. “I developed severe PTSD.”
A Padres fan since their stumbling 110-loss start in 1969, Greenstone was floored when she first heard the public-address announcer at Petco Park ask veterans to stand and be acknowledged.
Greenstone had walled off her roiling feelings from the world for decades.
