Andy Green is getting a honeymoon that Bruce Bochy never got when he became manager of the Padres.
Bochy faced a “win or get fired” mandate, though it was never put that bluntly.
One, Bochy wasn’t the first choice of new Padres bosses John Moores and Larry Lucchino. They inherited Bochy, who was hired by Randy Smith.
Two, the new bosses turned up the heat from the jump.
Moores, the majority owner, more than doubled the player payroll entering his second year and first full season as owner.
He and Lucchino wanted a new ballpark, and needed on-field fun to whip up the local fans to gain voter approval for a big subsidy.
