MARYVALE, Ariz. — Liked Tyson Ross and James Shields before him, right-hander Andrew Cashner debuted this spring with two scoreless innings Monday. The Padres' No. 3 starter allowed three hits and a walk, striking out one, in an 8-2 win over Milwaukee at Maryvale Baseball Park. San Diego improved to 2-5 in Cactus League play.
Cashner has worked with pitching coach Darren Balsley to create more sink on his pitches, and Monday's game unveiled some early results.
"The biggest thing is getting my fastball down," the right-hander said. "I thought I did a better job. I think I can still do a better job, but my breaking ball was really, really good today.
