A soft single and a long home run pulled the rug out from under the Padres’ chance at a second straight sweep.
With two outs in the 11th inning, the Cardinals’ Kolten Wong reached on a dribbler into no-man’s land on the right side of the infield that Eric Hosmer fielded but had nowhere to throw as the speedy Wong crossed the bag well before lumbering 6-foot-9 Brad Wieck got anywhere near it.
Wieck, who had entered at the top of the inning, then left a 1-2 slider just up and on the inside half of the plate for Matt Wieters to launch to left field for a two-run homer that stood as the deciding hit in 5-3 Cardinals victory.
