PEORIA, Ariz. —
Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. went inside. Greg Garcia followed about 15 minutes later.
It was well past noon Friday, three days before Padres position players were required to report to spring training. Eric Hosmer stayed in the Arizona sun.
On his fifth day at the Peoria Sports Complex, Hosmer was among the last players — and by far the highest-paid one — remaining on a back field working and getting worked over by infield coach Bobby Dickerson.
“I got to meet with Bobby in the offseason,” Hosmer said. “… I got fired up, wanting to work with him and get a head start, so when camp starts I’m not new to anything and I’m up to speed.
