PEORIA, Ariz. — Baseball lived in a uniform is one thing. Baseball lived in a television booth is entirely another. A phone conversation proved that to Andy Ashby.
One day, while the former Padres pitcher was working as an analyst for Fox Sports San Diego, his wife called.
“It was so funny,” Ashby said this week. “I was with my daughters. My wife said, ‘They need makeup.’ I said, ‘I’ll take ’em to Nordstrom. I need makeup anyway.’ One of my daughters was like, ‘Dad, you have to get makeup?’
Mall runs for powder and concealer became the masculine-bruising price Ashby paid to remain close to baseball, the game he loves.
