Tuesday, March 29th was the deadline for teams to make a decision on Article XX(B) free agents. Any qualifying veterans in camp were due to receive a $100k retention bonus or be sent packing. The Padres saw a little of everything as a result of this deadline.
As previously reported, Philip Humber was told that he wasn't going to make the opening day roster, so he elected to retire from professional baseball. He came in to camp specifically looking for a big league job, stating early on that if he was asked to work in AAA, maybe it would be time to move on.
