62nd All-Star Game: Ripken's three-run homer leads AL victory

American League 4, National League 2

July 9, 1991, SkyDome, Toronto

Starting pitchers: Jack Morris, Twins; Tom Glavine, Braves.

Managers: Lou Piniella, Reds; Tony La Russa, A’s.

MVP: Cal Ripken, Orioles.

Highlight: Tony Gwynn opened the game with a single to left field and scored on a single by Bobby Bonilla. AL pitching had dominated recent years to such a degree that Ryne Sandberg’s third-inning double was the NL’s first extra-base hit since 1987. It didn’t produce a run, however. Ripken’s three-run homer in the third inning supplied all the offense the AL needed.
