57th All-Star Game: Clemens leads AL to victory

American League 3, National League 2

July 15, 1986, Astrodome, Houston

Starting pitchers: Roger Clemens, Red Sox; Dwight Gooden, Mets.

Managers: Dick Howser, Royals; Whitey Herzog, Cardinals.

MVP: Clemens.

Highlight: Clemens made a memorable All-Star debut, pitching three perfect innings to open the game. It was a good thing because the NL pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts — including a record-tying five straight by the Dodgers’ Fernando Valenzuela — equaling a total that had been achieved just three times before. Gooden didn’t fare as well, giving up two runs in the second inning when Lou Whitaker followed Dave Winfield’s double with a two-run homer.
