49th All-Star Game: San Diego treated to all the stars

National League 7, American League 3

July 11, 1978, San Diego Stadium, San Diego

Starting pitchers: Jim Palmer, Orioles; Vida Blue, Giants.

Managers: Billy Martin, Yankees; Tommy Lasorda, Dodgers.

MVP: Steve Garvey, Dodgers.

Highlight: The crowd of 51,549 watched the AL score two quick runs in the first inning, cashing in Rod Carew’s triple and George Brett’s double, and made it 3-0 with a run in the third. Little did everyone know that the AL offense was done for the day. The NL came roaring back with three runs in the third off Palmer, who walked three straight batters to force in a run before Garvey made it 3-3 with a two-run single.
