National League 7, American League 2
July 23, 1974, Three Rivers Stadium, Pittsburgh
Starting pitchers: Gaylord Perry, Indians; Andy Messersmith, Dodgers.
Managers: Dick Williams, Angels; Yogi Berra, Mets.
MVP: Steve Garvey, Dodgers.
Highlight: Would anyone be shocked to know Berra did something unconventional? He used five pitchers — Messersmith, the Pirates’ Ken Brett, the Mets’ Jon Matlack, the Cardinals’ Lynn McGlothen and the Dodgers’ Mike Marshall — who had never appeared in an All-Star Game. They went out and limited the AL to four hits.
