42nd All-Star Game: AL gets only win in 20-game stretch

American League 6, National League 4

July 13, 1971, Tiger Stadium, Detroit

Starting pitchers: Dock Ellis, Pirates; Vida Blue, A’s.

Managers: Sparky Anderson, Reds; Earl Weaver, Orioles.

MVP: Frank Robinson, Orioles.

Highlight: The AL players didn’t know it at the time, but this was a win to savor. They had not won an All-Star Game in nine years — and they wouldn’t win again for another 12 years. All the runs in the game scored on home runs and all six homers came off the bats of future Hall of Famers.
