Trend surfaces in Chargers' head-coach search

The past decade of Chargers head coaches has featured men with offense as their main expertise. Not since defensive-minded Marty Schottenheimer, whose five-year tenure concluded in early 2007, has there been an exception; he preceded six seasons under Norv Turner and four under Mike McCoy.

Both men were considered offensive gurus.

It appears the next head coach won’t be.

Four men on Tuesday joined the list of known interview candidates to fill the Chargers’ head coach vacancy, according to sources and reports. Buccaneers defensive coordinator Mike Smith, Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub, Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott and Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin form a list with Dolphins defensive coordinator Vance Joseph and Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia.
