Spurs forward David West has a special rooting interest in Saturday’s U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
For the past five summers, Dexter Lawrence — a defensive lineman for the East squad who some analysts deem the top recruit in the country — has called West “coach.”
A native of Wake Forest, North Carolina, Lawrence is an alum of the AAU team West founded and coaches in Raleigh called the Garner Road Basketball Club.
“He was getting pretty good at basketball,” said West, who will be on a charter flight to New York when Saturday’s high school All-Star game kicks off at the Alamodome.
