LOS ANGELES — A day after Sean Marks became the latest Spurs staffer to take a bigger job elsewhere, coach Gregg Popovich was asked to describe the characteristics he and general manager R.C. Buford look for in potential job candidates.
His answer was fascinating in its detail, and offered a window into how the Spurs operate. Here is Popovich’s unedited response:
“For us, it’s easy. You’re looking for character. Well, what the hell does that mean? We’re looking for people who have gotten over themselves. You can tell that pretty quick. You can talk to someone for four or five minutes and you can tell if it’s about them, or if they understand they’re just a piece of the puzzle.
