Spurs make Monty Williams hiring official

The Spurs announced a bevy of staff changes, additions and promotions Friday. The most notable name among them: Monty Williams, who has been named vice president of basketball operations.

Williams returns to San Antonio, where he played two seasons with the Spurs and cut his coaching teeth as an intern during the 2004-05 campaign. A head coach in New Orleans from 2010-15, Williams saw his first season as an assistant coach in Oklahoma City cut short last February by the tragic death of his wife, Ingrid, in a traffic accident.

The Spurs’ front office has also added Brian Wright — formerly a Detroit Pistons executive — as an assistant general manager.
