In this Spurs news update, the San Antonio Spurs may already have a heir to Tim Duncan's throne in mind if the Big Fundamental decides to retire after the 2014-15 NBA season.
Per Frank Isola of the New York Daily News, "the Knicks’ main free-agent target, Marc Gasol, is also being targeted as a possible replacement to Tim Duncan assuming Ol’ Man Riverwalk retires this summer."
The New York Knicks have long been interested in Gasol, and they are likely to make a major run at the Grizzlies big man in order to pair him alongside superstar Carmelo Anthony at Madison Square Garden.
However, the allure of taking over for Duncan in head coach Gregg Popovich's system may supersede anything that Knicks president Phil Jackson has to offer. With Tony Parker and Kawhi Leonard on board and the franchise's status as a proven winner over a long period of time, don't be surprised if Gasol's final two choices are returning to Memphis and heading to San Antonio, with the Knicks trailing far behind.
