FULLERTON, Calif. — Preseason All-West Coast Conference honoree Hannah Diaz proved Friday that she belonged on the list with a goal in the first game of the year, but her strike was not enough to overcome a two-goal deficit as host Cal State Fullerton topped the Saint Mary’s women’s soccer team 2-0 at Titan Stadium in both teams’ 2016 season opener.
Diaz followed behind a Gaels attack in the waning seconds of the game. Cal State Fullerton goalkeeper Jennifer Stuart came out to block a point-blank shot from 15 yards out in the 89th minute, but the rebound of the shot flew outside of the box.
