BERKELEY, Calif. — It took everything it had, but for the second straight year California was able to fight off rally after Saint Mary's rally, escaping Friday night with a 3-1 (23-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-23) win at Haas Pavilion.
HOW IT HAPPENED
· California (9-1) held big leads in all three of the sets it won, but in all three frames the Gaels (4-5) charged back to make it a one- or two-point set.
· Cal led 19-11 in set two, 21-13 in set three and 20-14 in set four, but Saint Mary's came back to make it 23-22, 23-21 and 23-23, respectively, before eventually falling in each set.
