MORAGA, Calif. — A shutdown pitching performance by Katlyn Whitt gave Saint Mary’s a win in the first game of the day as the Gaels and Toreros split Saturday’s doubleheader.

Whitt proved to be the difference maker in the opening game of the afternoon as she threw a complete game shutout for the Gaels (16-23, 2-4 WCC) en route to her sixth win of the season. The junior from nearby Dublin scattered three hits and struck out one in her seven innings of work.
The Toreros (18-17, 4-2 WCC) managed to get runners on third base in both the second and third frame, but Whitt induced a pop out and tapper back to the circle, respectively, to get out of trouble.
