MORAGA, Calif. — The Cougars' (25-21, 9-1 WCC) big bats made the difference in the series opener on Friday as Saint Mary's (11-35, 4-6 WCC) fell 7-0 at Cottrell Field.
A two-run home run that flew just within the left field foul pole gave BYU an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Olivia Sanchez cleared the bases in the third with a three-run RBI single to center field to put the Cougars up five and an infield single would cross the final two runs in the top of the seventh.
The Gaels had eight hits in the game but stranded eight runners in the shutout loss.
