MORAGA, Calif. — Shutdown defense and hot shooting Saturday kept the Saint Mary’s College men’s basketball team unbeaten in West Coast Conference play and led it to its seventh straight win with a 72-38 victory over San Diego at McKeon Pavilion.
The Gaels (13-1, 4-0 WCC) held San Diego (5-8, 0-2 WCC) to four separate scoring droughts of 2 minutes, 44 seconds, or longer, during the game while limiting the Toreros to 39.6 percent shooting and its lowest point total versus the Gaels since Jan. 22, 2009 (42). Saint Mary’s outrebounded San Diego 35-21, including 28-18 on the defensive end.
